Emma Nishimura

Review in Border Crossings Magazine

The current issue of BORDER CROSSINGS magazine, Issue #163, features an insightful and thought-provoking review of Emma Nishimura's 2023 solo exhibition, Rememory: Echoes and Archives, written by Renata Azevedo Moreira. The inaugural exhibition of Nishimura's work at United Contemporary presented various series from the artist's oeuvre, all of which investigate and honour the Japanese Canadian experiences of internment and marginalisation during World War II.

In Azevedo Moreira's review, we are presented with the breadth and weight of this legacy, and the generational trauma which is instrinsically linked with the artist's laborious technique and chosen practice.

"Nishimura maintains that POC heal collectively, resisting subjugation by counting on the support of their community through social action and activism. Within this framework, returning to ancestral roots and cultivating cultural authenticity are crucial elements to rebuild narratives and undo solidified systems of oppression." Renata Azevedo Moreira

Emma Nishimura will be exhibiting at United Contemporary alongside Linda Sormin this August, 2024. Please contact the gallery for more information or to receive an advanced preview.
