Rooted is a depiction of Precious Achiuwa of the Toronto Raptors. The stylistic nature of this portrait explores how fashion, dress, and elements of personal expression can create and strengthen links within the Black community. Historically, Black people have been restricted on ways they could express themselves through clothing, disrupting their links to their cultures and heritage. In this portrait, Achiuwa, is shown challenging these restrictions of the time by wearing a headband inspired by the traditional fabric aso oke (ah-sa-okay) of the Yoruba tribe, who originated in the south-west of Nigeria.
