Biography

As a painter working from life and urban surroundings, Stefan Berg is interested in perceptual experience. Drawn to landscapes where nature and architecture converges, Berg immerses himself in his environment, creating documentarian vistas that record fluctuating elements that are unique to each painting. Working outside involves working within time, creating paintings which embody duration. Berg’s scenes demonstrate the impact and evidence of human habitation in our surroundings, and depicts this reality out of circumstance. “Every landscape has its own history, by painting it I consider a geological, architectural, art historical, and personal past.”

Stefan Berg received a BFA from OCAD University in 2008, along with the Solomon Painting Award and Eric Freifeld Award. His work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States and Europe, and featured in the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, and the Telegram Journal. Berg would like to gratefully acknowledge the support of the Chalmers Family Fund, the Access Copyright Foundation, the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. In 2024, Berg was awarded the Chalmers Art Fellowship. Through the Ontario Arts Council, this grant aims to support Ontario artists to undertake an investigation or examination of their artistic practice, and provides assistance at a time in an artist’s career when a concentration on artistic growth will have the greatest impact on their long-term artistic development.
